Santa Cristina Festival: Lloret de Mar’s Most Iconic Tradition
Every year on 24 July, Lloret de Mar celebrates the Santa Cristina Festival, one of the town’s most important and cherished festivities. It is a day when history, tradition and culture come together to honour Saint Christina, the patron saint of Lloret de Mar, through celebrations that have been preserved for centuries.
A Tradition with Maritime Roots
Devotion to Saint Christina dates back to the Middle Ages, when fishermen and sailors prayed for her protection before setting out to sea. Over time, this devotion evolved into the town’s main annual festival, which remains one of Lloret de Mar’s most representative celebrations.
The Maritime Procession and the Hermitage of Santa Cristina
One of the highlights of the day is the traditional maritime procession. Decorated boats depart from Lloret Beach and sail to Santa Cristina Beach, home to the hermitage dedicated to the town’s patron saint.
Once there, a solemn mass is held, and visitors have the opportunity to explore this historic sanctuary surrounded by nature and overlooking the Mediterranean Sea.
The Ball de Plaça
Following the religious ceremonies, the traditional Ball de Plaça takes place. This historic folk dance is one of the festival’s most treasured traditions and symbolises the identity and pride of Lloret de Mar. Every year, it brings together locals and visitors in a joyful celebration of the town’s heritage.
S'Amorra Amorra
Another of the festival’s most anticipated events is S'Amorra Amorra, the traditional rowing regatta featuring historic Mediterranean boats known as llaguts. This exciting competition pays tribute to Lloret’s maritime past and has become one of the defining moments of the Santa Cristina Festival.
Music, Local Cuisine and Fireworks
Throughout the day, Lloret de Mar comes alive with activities for all ages, including traditional sardana dances, concerts, parades, family entertainment and the famous Santa Cristina Stew, a traditional meal that has been part of the celebration for generations.
The festivities conclude with a spectacular fireworks display, lighting up the bay and bringing this unforgettable day to a memorable close.
